We are seeking healthy volunteers to take part in a psychology experiment which investigates the effects of alcohol on mood and cognitive processing. Volunteers are required to attend laboratories in the School of Psychology, on the University of Liverpool campus, for two sessions, one week apart, each lasting approximately one hour.
During the sessions, participants will be provided with alcoholic beverages and will complete questionnaires relating to mood and alcohol consumption, as well as computer-based reaction time tasks, including measurements of eye movements. All participants will receive reimbursement for their travel expenses and their time. In order to take part, you should be healthy, aged between 18 and 30, and a fluent English speaker. Unfortunately you cannot take part if you need to wear glasses, although contact lenses are OK. We are recruiting participants who consume in excess of 15 units (Females) or 22 units (Males) of alcohol in an average week.
For details of the number of alcohol units in common alcoholic beverages, see: http://www.howsyourdrink.org.uk/

What is a unit of alcohol? Idiot! A unit of alcohol is 10ml of pure alcohol. Counting units of alcohol can help us to keep track of the amount we're drinking. The list below shows the approximate number of units of alcohol in common drinks:-
A pint of ordinary (4%) strength lager (eg. Carling Black Label, Fosters) - 2.3 units
A pint of strong lager (eg. Stella Artois, Kronenbourg 1664) - 3 units
A pint of beer / ordinary strength ale (eg. John Smith's, Boddingtons, Guinness) - 2.3 units
A pint of ordinary strength cider (Dry Blackthorn, Strongbow) - 3 units
A 440ml can of strong lager (eg. Stella Artois, Carlsberg Export, Grolsch) - 2.2 units
A standard 175ml glass of red or white wine - around 2 units
A large 250ml glass of red or white wine - around 3 units
A small (25ml) measure of spirits - 1 unit
A large (35ml) measure of spirits - 1.4 units
A double measure of spirits - 2 units
A 275ml bottled alcopop (eg Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi Breezer, WKD, Reef) - 1.5 units
Remember that lagers and ciders sold in bottles are usually stronger than those sold on draught. The labels of some bottled drinks will tell you how many units of alcohol are in the bottle.

Dear sue ellen,
i need no fu%$£ng unit of alcohol to keep track, i've got a waiter who remind me... collecting money every time I ask for another glass.
Just my two cents, i think the list is quite too complex for a person trying to relax... when i'm drinking there's no space in my mind for number like 2.3, 2.2 or 1.4. And i guess how can i know if the spirit i'm going to receive is small (25 ml) or large (35 ml).
Bah... continue enjoying in your counting units, i'll continue enjoying in my drinking.

Io sbocco solo in casi eccezionali...
